Aphorisms
The secrets of life yield themselves aphoristically – in dreams and memories, in poems, paintings and songs – often seeming cryptic but in reality not so. You only need the key, which lies within. The inner being forms and shapes the outer symbols. It asks you to listen, not for what is the same but for what is single, illuminated, individual. The single wave. Your brow may be creased for days with puzzlement over the many meanings people put forward about life and then suddenly the moonlight ripples, releasing all doubts. Even in the world out there – in nature itself – the inner being arranges, or at least discovers, clues. A flock of crows crossing the rooftops, with only one carrying away the treasured crust. What is it in you that carries away the crust, while everything else merely flies? What do you have to listen to, what to ignore? A blackbird hiding in the ivy tells you – without doubt – that you are in the school of the holy spirit. Pigeons (more birds!) picking seeds from the lawn flap from the faraway spirit – it animates them, moves them, but cannot quite be in them. What do you look for in yourself? The work of sunrise, the nature of what is condemned to die and wait for a new chance, a new season. Will you be there with it? And a day of low cloud – what new eyes of light are germinating? The message is somehow to be content with your dreams and memories, with your artistic impulses. Life offers you what you need to live fruitfully. Aphorisms.

but a single wave crashed.
2. My brow creased for days over meanings I’d heard
but then moonlight
rippled.
3. A flock of crows crossed the rooftops. Only one
carried the crust away.
4. That blackbird in ivy tells
I’m in the school
of the holy spirit.
5. Those pigeons picking seeds from the lawn
flap
from the faraway spirit.
6. Sunrise creates trees in the mist.
It leaves me my shadow
and my sight.
7. Old leaves curled in the frost.
The sun waits behind a pine.
I’ll be there too.
8. A mulch of cloud drives new thoughts to the light.
Can I see with eyes of earth?
Best wishes, today,
